'Battle'

At first, equal cover,
then clutch, turn, yank - repeat,
'til the duvet's swiped.

Vrel's Woman at the window

The rocking chair tilts
as an old woman starts
from her dozing; who...
who is at the window?

The lower panes only
hold the shape, with light
weakly trying but failing
to give the face structure.

The careworn eyes
seek those of the waif;
her past shimmers outside:
what was, faces what is.

The little shadow has gone,
the silhouettes of darkness
regain their usual forms-
only her heart plays games.

Edinburgh trees

Dangling in the darkness
Fairy trees, like aspirations,
Float unanchored.

Comment

Charity's not cold,
Giving must not be fatigued,
Share, help, give and smile.

Travelling back

Familiar roads,
Vistas trigger long gone thoughts
and make the past ache.

Haiku

Rusty fountain pens
Grand gates leading nowhere now
Milestones in the ditch.

Look not at the bank
but its rippling twin:
Monet colour but Klimpt lines.

Stop

Cease the restless struggle
Be still and know I'm God;
Space can bring answers.

The Namib Desert

Red and gold litchens

Make patterns in bone bleached sands,

dead land is not dead.

The Skeleton Coast

Shells of ships and crabs

are play things of the surf now;

their purpose - the lens.

Safari 'zoo'

Lions roaming free

while man is confined and fenced:

a neat reversal.

Portrait

Last day

Still now and empty,

The room's past is bound in bags -

Outside a frog sings.

Transition

It is closing time:

The known lies behind, with hope

standing shivering.

Style

Cool and elegant,

the Delft jug draws eyes; its chips

give beauty, history.

New beginnings

Grain by grain sand slipped

from the ostrich's sunk head,

lifting it, he saw.

Awaiting the Axe

The end is pending;

tension and regret balance -

new starts seem hollow.

Green Lane

Wind carved, the trees bowed
deep to shape the ancient way,
with arch precision.
Rain twisted and sneaked
past the canopy to flush
loose earth from the floor.
Man's irritation
or vision, pushed rock and stone
to side the sunk lane.
Feet have tramped the years
from tor to sea through its aisle
of set direction.
Minds wrestled with all
time's problems, oblivious
of its green shelter.
Slowly the sheep's path
became a Devon trackway
linking place and lives.

Rock graffiti

What hand carved his trace
On a high peak rock? Sometimes,
idle acts live on.

From crysalises
break forth new lives - and regimes,
Possibly short lived.

Dormant; Stirring, then
as factors bond, eruption:
we await....lava.

Possibilities

Curled into a fist
or unfirled to touch, fingers
have poised potential.

Whitwell's winter dawn

Blaze oh blaze, dull bricks
in low tricksy sun and breed
ideas from surprise.
